The boat that started it all
Genesis was commissioned by photographer Alexis Andrews after eight years spent sailing on a previous Carriacou sloop. The project began with the hand-selection of white cedar trees in Grenada, followed by the laying of a greenheart keel directly on the beach.
It wasn't easy: termite damage due to an exceptionally wet season, the devastating passage of Hurricane Ivan nearby, and difficulty finding a suitable mast in the Grand Étang forest. The boat was launched on a Sunday in March 2005, after a blessing and the traditional preparations—the launching mobilizing the entire village.
Everything else stemmed from this project. In 2009, Alexis Andrews founded the West Indies Regatta with friends, with the aim of preserving these boats, and then realized Vanishing Sail in 2015. The Genesis project led to the construction of five 42-foot sailboats and the creation of the Saint-Barthélemy festival.
She is in her element, and she is part of the elements because she was born here.
