80 feet: the longest boat in Alwyn Enoe

At 80 feet, Agatha D is the longest of Alwyn Enoe's known boats. Its hull exceeds that of Phiabiana Corion, at 76 feet, and the schooner Jambalaya, at 73 feet.

Agatha D still bears her original name, confirmed Alwyn Enoe in September 2026, who no longer remembers the year of construction. The carpenter's record details the rest of his work: Alwyn Enoe.

A name on a plaque

Agatha D is among the twelve boats engraved on the plaque of the first Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to Alwyn Enoe in 2019 by the Carriacou Regatta Festival.

The Carenage, and no longer Windward

In 2019, the name reappeared where it was least expected: in a report by the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism, the Caribbean regional fisheries organization, dedicated to the assessment of flying fish. The chapter on vessels and their registration lists pages and pages, country by country. In the middle of Grenada's list, a line of three columns: AGATHA D, number 918, Carenage.

The painting bears a title that already reveals something about the vessel: "Grenada Registered Multi-Day Use Vessels," Grenadian ships registered for multi-day voyages. These aren't the small boats that return in the evening; these are vessels capable of staying out at sea—exactly what an 80-foot sloop can do.

And its home port is neither Windward, the carpenters' village, nor even Carriacou: it's Carenage, the old commercial and fishing port of Saint George, the capital, at the other end of the country. The boat has therefore left the island where it was born to go and work in Grenada.

One caveat, however. The register gives neither length, nor year, nor shipwright's name: nothing in it formally links this number 918 to Alwyn Enoe's ship. It is the concordance of the name and the country that establishes the connection, not a document.

November 17, 2009: boarded off the coast of Sint Maarten

On November 17, 2009, at approximately 2:30 a.m., the Sint Maarten police and coast guard intercepted a boat in the island's territorial waters. On board were 32 undocumented migrants, mostly women, all of Haitian nationality according to the police statement, and an 11-year-old girl. The passengers stated they were heading to Miami.

All were taken to the Philipsburg police station; the child was placed in the care of a local foundation, and the others were detained pending their return. The press release named the boat, specifically: "Agatha D. Grenada." It was impounded for the purposes of the investigation.

Here again, caution is necessary: no source links this boat to Alwyn Enoe's sloop other than by its name and flag. But a Grenadian vessel bearing this name, large enough to carry thirty-two people and sail up the Lesser Antilles, closely resembles the one being sought. And if it is indeed the same boat, one question remains: seized in 2009, it was still listed in the Grenadian registry ten years later.

What remains to be found

The year of construction, rigging type, and successive owners remain unknown, and no photographs are known. Two additional questions have arisen since this research: does Grenadian registry number 918 actually refer to this vessel, and what became of the "Agatha D. Grenada" seized in Sint Maarten in 2009? Any information or photographs that could complete this record would be greatly appreciated.
