The first sloop of that name was designed and built by Jessie Compton. Cyril Compton, a fisherman and carpenter from Windward, financed it by selling fruit from a sailboat in the U.S. Virgin Islands for four years. The name came from a dream his mother had.

The sloop was named for a dream that Cyril's mother had.

Nancy Terrell, All At Sea, July 2007

2005: Emily wins Margeta O

In 2005, Hurricane Emily destroyed Margeta O. The family salvaged the mast and pulleys. His brother, Bernard Compton, then built him a new 42-foot sloop, Margeta O II. Cyril worked on it with his sons, Cyron and Daine, and many relatives and friends. Everything was made of local wood, except for the bronze and steel fittings.

The 2007 launch in Windward was a village affair: people ate, drank, sang and danced, and a pastor blessed the boat. Cyril, whom everyone calls "Uncle C", then raced it, without an engine, like a real fishing boat.

2019: Margeta, the latest addition

In 2019, Calvert Compton, one of the last master carpenters of Carriacou, built Margeta, a 36-foot sloop. Its name is reminiscent of Cyril Compton's Margeta O.

It is built using the same traditional method: on the beach, based on a full-scale half-hull model, using greenheart and white cedar, with bronze nails and cotton caulking. Then the whole village helps to launch it.

Old-fashioned cruises

Margeta now belongs to Piero Zipoli, who operates it with Sloop Cruises. With its rustic cabin and small galley, it takes up to four passengers to explore Grenada and the Grenadines. The same shipowner is having a new one built. Windjammer.

Contact

Site — sloopcruises.com

E-mail — info@carriacoumarine.com

Sources

Sloop Cruises: Our sloops

Nancy Terrell, All At Sea, July 1, 2007: Preparing for the Carriacou Regatta

Kitty Martin, Cruising World, August 29, 2007: Another Carriacou Workboat Makes a Splash

Bronwen, Picton Castle, June 8, 2011: Captured by the Character of Carriacou

Un nom né d’un rêve Avant Margeta, il y eut Margeta O.
