He learned to windsurf on equipment his grandfather bought at a customs auction, and at 16, while still a schoolboy, he competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He then became a professional windsurfer, before turning to nautical tourism with his company, Adventure Antigua.

In 2007, fascinated by the speed of the Carriacou sloops at the Antigua Classic, he commissioned his own from Alwyn Enoe. Even before receiving his boat, he helped another owner finish a half-built sloop, Ocean Nomad, and sailed it back to Antigua just before the 2008 regatta. Discover this boat: Navasana.

A name kept secret

As is the tradition in Carriacou, the boat's name is only revealed on the day of its launch, a Sunday after mass. The construction is delayed, and the sloop is not launched until 2010. It is called Zemi.

July 2010: Calistus at the top of the mast

In July 2010, Eli Fuller and his team came to Carriacou to rig the boat: forestay, shrouds, backstays, jib and mainsail halyards. Pulleys and halyards had to be attached to a mast that had never had them.

It is Callistus Enoe, the carpenter's son, who climbs to the top of the mast and balances on the spreaders to install the pulleys.

Calistus showed no fear at all and got the job done.

Eli Fuller, Adventures in Antigua blog, July 22, 2010

Eli Fuller finds it amusing: if the boat had been built in the UK, where safety rules are the strictest on the planet, the scene would have been unthinkable.

The most polished of the series

Zemi is distinguished by the quality of its finish: approximately $8,000 worth of bronze fittings, bronze portholes and skylights, a greenheart keel with a 2,300-pound lead keel, and about 6,000 pounds of lead under the floorboards. The interior remains intentionally uncluttered, but the boat retains a large load capacity, like working sloops.

2012: For sale, almost new

After its launch, Zemi sailed to Antigua. In 2012, Eli Fuller reluctantly decided to sell it: he was having his house built in Antigua. The boat had then only covered about 500 miles and its engine had only about fifteen hours on it.

Today it sails under the name Spirit of Zemi, registered in Antigua, and is featured on the plaque commemorating Alwyn Enoe. In June 2026, it was still seen sailing under spinnaker off the coast of Saint Barthélemy.

Contact

Instagram — @zemilyfe

Sources

Eli Fuller, Adventures in Antigua blog, July 22, 2010: Just back from a trip to see Zemi in Carriacou

All At Sea: An Antiguan Adventurer: Eli Fuller

Adventure Antigua: Traditionally built Caribbean Carriacou Sloop for sale

Instagram: @zemilyfe

Le rêve d’un ancien olympien Eli Fuller a grandi à Antigua.
